In a tragic incident in Lake Balboa, a car crashed into a tree and a commercial building, resulting in one fatality and the need for emergency response. The incident occurred on Saticoy Street in the 17300 block around 9:45 a.m., as reported by Officer Cuellar of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Initially, the Los Angeles Fire Department described the crash as a collision between a solo sedan and a tree/commercial building. However, further investigation revealed that two vehicles were involved. Footage from the scene, shared on the Citizen app, confirmed this account.
According to the footage, a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck collided with the building, while the compact car came to a halt on the sidewalk and roadway near a row of trees. Fire officials initially reported that both individuals were trapped inside the car. However, upon clarification, it was determined that the person who tragically lost their life at the scene was the driver of the pickup truck, an adult man. The other driver, an adult woman who was the sole occupant of the coupe, was critically injured and immediately transported to a regional trauma center.
Although the building only suffered superficial damage, a natural gas meter was impacted, leading to a gas leak. The LAFD promptly responded, halting the leak and ensuring the safety of those in the vicinity. The affected building was a Panda Express restaurant, requiring clearance from the health department due to the damage.
Other agencies, including SoCalGas, the L.A. Department of Building and Safety, and the L.A. County Department of Public Health, also arrived at the scene to aid in the emergency response.
As investigators work to determine the exact cause of the collision, LAPD Valley Traffic Division is leading the formal investigation. Despite rainy conditions in the area during the time of the incident, no definitive factors have been identified as contributing to the crash.
